The days pass and a friendship develops that blossoms into something much deeper. Elissa, however, has never seen her friend's face and quite possibly never will. Charles has hidden in the forest for good reason, and even though his feelings have grown for Elissa, he fears they can never be together.

In the Dead of Winter, a short story by Tamara A. Lowery

Master Torbin feels honored to be accepted to a post at the University of Cordun and eager to get there. His greatest obstacle is the long trip around the edges of the Forest of Narghill. Why is there no route through the forest? No one in the village he stops in on his way seems to know of any path through. The villagers try their best to delay Master Torbin’s departure, at least until the after the Solstice and the Winter Festival. Only one old man claims to know of a shortcut through the forest, and offers to show it to him. He soon learns why no one travels in the Forest of Narghill, especially on Solstice.

Destiny, a children's book by Charles Reap

This little story is for youngsters up to the age of perhaps 10. It is about a tiny sprig of a post oak that grows in a huge forest totally consisting of pines. It is resented and not wanted by the pines, does not understand why it was thrust into such a place and is unmercifully teased and tormented by the older pines. In the end, however, it perseveres and progresses to its intended destiny as a lovely shade tree in a restful meadow. The story presents to youngsters that they can succeed in life even through adversity.
